St. Margaret Church of the Árpád Dynasty – Veszprém's neo-baroque gem

The Árpád-ház Szent Margit Church in Veszprém is one of the city's most significant buildings, built in 1938 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the arrival of St. Stephen. The purpose of the church was to provide a worthy home for the Catholic community of the new part of the city and to commemorate the Eucharistic Holy Year.

Architectural features:

  • Neo-Baroque style, imposing tower topped with an onion dome
  • 43 meters long, 17 meters wide building, 41-meter tower height
  • A wide staircase leads up to the three-section main facade
  • A special feature of the interior: the floor slopes down towards the altar

The painting of St. Margaret on the main altar was painted by Károly Krusnyák in 1939, featuring Nándor Rott, bishopand the mayor of the town at the time. The church was granted the status of a parish church in 1944, and in 1946, Archbishop József Mindszenty had the relics of Saint Margaret placed there.
