Our guest: Nóra Rácz, literary translator, who published a superb short story by Estonian author Mart Kivastik in issue No. 93 of Vár Ucca Műhely.

We will be speaking with our author about literary translation, contemporary Estonian literature, and Estonian-Hungarian relations.

During the evening, we will pay tribute to the painter Győző Somogyi (1942–2026). In this issue, Imre Péntek’s essay examines the artist’s body of work.

Mart Kivastik (1963, Tartu) is an Estonian artist.

He studied conducting and later literature. Since 1991, he has been a freelance writer, journalist, screenwriter, and film director. His works published in Hungarian include:

Breviarium (selected short stories), and Stairway to Heaven (novel).

In addition to numerous literary awards, he was named City of Tartu’s Writer in 2023.

In 2023, he visited Veszprém as part of the literary project titled My City, Your City, Our City  (VEB 2023). In October 2026, he will visit Hungary as a guest of Margó Literary Festival.

Nóra Rácz (1981, Veszprém) is a literary translator, linguist, and educator.

She attended the University of Tartu and studied linguistics at Berzsenyi Dániel College. She also earned a degree in education. She was a student of Lovassy Secondary Grammar School.

Her translations of Estonian literature have been published since 2010. She is an accomplished translator of contemporary Estonian prose and plays. We have her to thank for the complete Hungarian translation of Indrek Hargla’s internationally acclaimed historical science fiction series. Her latest literary translation is Mart Kivastik’s: Stairway to Heaven. To date, she has translated thirteen Estonian literary works into Hungarian.

She lives in Veszprém.
