Andrew II and the journey of the Hungarian crusaders – lecture on Margat Castle

Many people may not even know that a functioning prison was hidden in the castle for several centuries, right up until 2003 in Veszprém Castle.

However, there was also a monastery, a hospital, and a medicinal bath under the castle. How many secrets and how much knowledge can a castle hide from posterity?

Then and now – In the footsteps of King Andrew II, Hungarians in Margat exhibition takes us back to the 13th century, when in 1217 King Andrew II set sail with his army of 10,000 crusaders. set sail for the Holy Land with his army of 10,000 crusaders to recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims.

Although they set out with great enthusiasm, the crusade was unsuccessful. The sick king and his remaining army found refuge in the fortress of the Knights Hospitaller, Margat Castle. The Order of St. John was one of the largest international organizations in medieval Europe and the most prominent in the field of nursing. The castle they built (now located in Syria) is one of the largest Crusader fortresses in the Holy Land, which was opened for research in 2007.

In the presentation and guided tour, curator Dezső Franta, restorer of archaeological materials, will talk to visitors about the unusual mission and interesting aspects of the mission, having been involved in the work since 2011.
