The fun doesn't end with summer—here's how to spend a day in Veszprém this fall

Although it’s officially September already, Indian summer is still in full swing—but we understand if, after a summer of beach trips and relaxation, you’re looking for a little change of pace. Fortunately, even as fall approaches, there are plenty of exciting events to choose from in Veszprém. 

Whether it’s a family getaway, a cultural experience, or a special culinary adventure, we’ve compiled a list of events that are great choices any time of year, whether you’re traveling alone, as a couple, or with your family.  

On the first weekend of September, House of Arts Veszprém hosted Photo200, that is, the 200 Years of Photography program’s official season-opening weekend, the events of which were included by the French Ministry of Culture in its official program celebrating the bicentennial of photography. On September 5–6, at Dubniczay Palace, you can explore various branches of photography, ranging from the world of old village photography to contemporary exhibitions. 

Modern Art Gallery - In the Vass László Collection Through October 11, you can view Bertalan Varga’s INTERLUDIUM solo exhibition, which is based on a systematic presentation of two groups of works created over the past three years. 

One of the region’s best-known cultural institutions is Laczkó Dezső Museum, which showcases the history of Veszprém, the Bakony Hills, and Lake Balaton, natural treasures, and ethnographic heritage. It’s worth returning to the museum even if you’ve visited before, since, in addition to the permanent exhibition titled Time Machine, the temporary exhibitions always have something new to offer. The Backyard Goals temporary exhibition runs until December 20, where soccer fans can get a closer look at the authentic atmosphere of village soccer fields. 

If you’re in the mood for a classic evening at the theater, you’re sure to find a performance to your liking in the repertoire of Petőfi Theater Veszprém. One of the oldest permanent theaters in the region West of the Danube has been a defining part of the city’s cultural life since 1908, where a wide variety of genres are featured, ranging from classical and contemporary plays to comedy shows, musicals, and children’s performances. In September, productions including Dead Poets Society and The Lovers of Ancona will be featured on the program. 

And if you enjoy dynamic, genre-crossing performances, you’ll want to check out the programs at Pannon Várszínház. The company, which has been active since 2001, has musical and dance productions, while their performances often address current social issues. In addition to Veszprém, you can also catch their shows in several other towns in the region, so it’s worth heading toward Lake Balaton for a theatre experience. During September and October, you can see performances of, among others, Be Faithful Unto Death, The Attic and The Paul Street Boys are among the performances you can see. 

Are you curious about the history of the greatest Hungarian geniuses and their inventions? would you like to set out on a quest for the hidden sounds, are you interested in the Berry and Dolly fairy tales, or perhaps you’d like to lose yourself in Vasarely’s world, rich in color and form?

The CODE 3D Studio also features screenings, where you can choose from six exciting themes, while the interactive exhibition area, you can discover the fascinating possibilities of technology and the digital world in a playful and spectacular way. Feel like getting some exercise or playing a game? CODE Play offers exciting games for all generations, while Flow & Balance offers immersive yoga and Body in Light offers immersive Pilates classes where you can unwind and find yourself.  

If you're looking for a truly unique historical site, you should visit the Dungeon Visitor Center. The exhibition, housed in the former dungeon of Veszprém Castle, explores the themes of crime and thepunishment, recounts stories from the past and details the daily lives of the inmates, while the renovated cells and common areas create a truly unique atmosphere.  

Discover Veszprém’s unique historical sites during the Cultural Heritage Days weekend! On September 19–20, at Ruttner House, you can explore the building from the basement to the attic, while family and house stories come to life, and at the Dungeon, you can learn about, including the system of violence in the 1950s and the history of the great prison breaks at Veszprém Dungeon. The program will also feature a book launch and a walking tour focusing on the city’s history. Registration is required for these events. 

Last-minute HelloVEB tip: at the Dungeon through September 6 you can still catch Zoé Szilágyi’s temporary exhibition titled Art Sets You Free. The popular artist’s paintings are at once raw, sensitive, and sincere. Combined with the unique atmosphere of the Dungeon, the spirit of punk offers a completely different exhibition experiencethan what you might be used to in a traditional gallery.  

If you’re looking for exciting indoor activities to do with your kids, fortunately there’s plenty to choose from in Veszprém. For fairy tale lovers, for example, Kabóca Puppet Theater, where family performances await kids all year round. It’s worth checking the current schedule from time to time, as guest performances and special productions are regularly featured. 

If you're looking for a more relaxing and truly creative activity, check out Eötvös Károly Library — Children’s Library— it offers story times, arts and crafts workshops, and kids' programs that provide a pleasant way to unwind. 

How about a little exercise? Veszprém Sports Pool might be the perfect choice! A quick swim or splash around not only tires the kids out, but also offers an active and entertaining program.

A day filled with cultural adventures is the perfect opportunity to sample some of Veszprém’s exciting culinary delights. The downtown area is full of places where you’ll find not only delicious food and drinks but also a unique atmosphere. 

If you’re planning a long brunch or a specialty coffee break, KUNSZT! is a great choice: in addition to the breakfast spot, there’s also a design shop, gallery, and community space, so you can easily linger there for the duration of an exhibition or event. 

If you’d rather relax with a glass of wine, head to Wine & Vinyl Bar & Store, where wines from Lake Balaton, tapas, and vinyl records come together to create a unique combination. 

If you're in the mood for something sweet, Füge Coffee & Ice Cream Parlor is also a great choice. Homemade pastries, quality coffee, and a friendly atmosphere—that’s why it’s worth stopping by not just in the summer, but all year round. 

And if you’re looking for an exciting place to spend the evening, one that offers a huge selection of drinks, Pekedli is the place for you—it regularly hosts quizzes, concerts, and other cultural events. 

Although Veszprém-Balaton Film Picnic has come to an end, Foton Audiovisual Center regularly features art films, documentaries, and community film screenings, while Hangvilla welcomes culture lovers all year round with concerts, theater performances, and family programs. 

Veszprém offers plenty of experiences even in the fall, but it’s also worth checking out other destinations in the Bakony-Balaton region if you’d like to spend your days doing something meaningful. An inspiring exhibition or a special museum visit in the city, a quiet day on the shores of Lake Balaton, or an adventurous hike in the Bakony forests—it’s up to you which one you start with!
